I DON’T CARE!!

According to a report submitted by Data commons organization, it shows that Kenya currently has a population of approximately 53 million citizens. The number will continue to grow in the coming years but it begs the question, will there be any environment to sustain this enormous population?

When people hear the word “environment” their minds simply rush to the thought of their surrounding water and trees, this is because the two are the most interacted with and are the most visible or accessible. What makes water and trees come to people’s minds is because of the campaigns that have been carried out before either locally or internationally, these two have been the main focus even on our screens at home, most of the environmentally inclined projects are usually about water and trees.

The environment is not limited only to water and trees but also bears, atmosphere or air, lithosphere or rocks, and soil (earth). These are the major components of the environment.

Trees are a main concern and more or less the backbone of the ecosystem as trees are connected and influence other elements of the environment in relation to how they affect us. They are the key factor in determining how we humans are affected by the environment, therefore they deserve all the credit and recognition they get.

But what’s to it after knowing all this? human beings around the world know about the changing climatic conditions and the adverse effects that the environment will have on them in the coming few years if we don’t act right, it is now evident that we don’t have time.

Some of these effects are already here with us, In Kenya, you can tell by the lack of rain for quite a long time leading to prolonged droughts thus establishing issues of food security and also the increase in heat levels and temperatures from the scorching sun rays. There have been frequent reports of animals dying from different parts of the country leading to huge losses for the owners, farmers have also seen better days as they were neither able to ensure sustainable crop growth nor make any good harvests and profits.

The lack of rain and the hot sun is a result of the changing climate, with the grasp of all this information and having the experience of punishment from mother nature are we ready to embrace change?

The message from mother nature doesn’t seem to have hit home yet as quite a few Kenyans are ready to do something for the environment or even change their ways. This is the wrong approach as the more the environment is degraded the more its effects will be adverse to us, including the reduction of the span of the human being’s life.
